HEROES

CELTIC MONKS
In the Book of Kells, beauty pervades, but not at the expense of the readability of the text (although there are errors).
Form and Function deliver an uplifting user experience, an experience kings and warriors plundered religious shrines and abbeys to obtain, from the 10th Century.
It can now be viewed at the Library of Trinity College Dublin.
HEROES

EDWARD TUFTE - Professor Emeritus of Statistics, Information Design & Political Economy at Yale University
Tufte's book "Envisioning Information" shows how multi-dimensional information spaces can be mapped to processing capacities of the brain.
The complex is rendered fast and easy to detect, because its presentation is matched to the Cognitive capabilities of the user.
HEROES

DILBERT - Comic Character
Scott Adams' observations on modern corporate life and technology just seem to hit all the right buttons
HEROES

NOAM CHOMSKY - Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at MIT
When he published 'Syntactic Structures' in 1957, Chomsky provided Psychology with the last nudge forward, from Behaviourism to Cognitivism.
It was thereafter accepted that humans manipulate mental representations of their environment (via mental processing) that bring about reasoning, language, imagery and thought. He thereby gave Cognitive Engineering and Cognitive Design a foundation.
Then he did some other quite pioneering stuff.
HEROES

AYN RAND - Author of the novel 'The Fountainhead', and designer of the character 'Howard Roark'.
"My writing is the projection of an ideal man." A. Rand
THE FOUNTAINHEAD is one of the greatest books of its time. In it you will meet, head-on, the brilliant young architect Howard Roark. You will witness the beauty, desirability and dangerous ambition of Dominique Francon. You will reel, stunned, like the millions of other readers who have assured this book a place in the twentieth century's history, at the meeting, and mating of these two most powerful creatures in modern America.
THE FOUNTAINHEAD is about ambition, power, gold and love - a love so firm that it triumphed like the hero‟s massive stone towers over slander, separation, jealousy and the cruel assaults of those who sought to destroy it. Good book if you are going on holiday.
HEROES

HARRY BECK - Draftsman and Cognitive Engineer
Harry Beck designed the first version of the London Underground 'Tube' map in his spare time.
He sacrificed geographical accuracy in favour of putting the map's function first - to assist passengers in finding out 'How do I get from A to B; and do I have to change lines?'
He was a trained engineer. It was initially dismissed as too radical a representation of the Underground, but he persevered because he believed in his user experience.
User 'performance' with the tube map has established it as 'fit for purpose'.
HEROES

EDNA MODE - has a passion for great design
When called out of a fifteen-year period of self-imposed retirement to repair damage to Mr. Incredible's supersuit, Edna Mode ends up producing a series of completely new, matching outfits for the entire family.
For safety reasons, she is very insistent on not including capes in the new design, because capes are dangerous and every superhero who had a cape died because of it.
Performance is everything!
HEROES

JOHN LONG - Professor Emeritus of Cognitive Engineering at University College London
John Long is a founding father of HCI and Cognitive Engineering in the UK, and a worldwide thought leader on what it is we think we are doing, when researching, designing or working. He was the originator of many of the "base ingredients" of Cognitive Engineering - the "Secret sauces".
